About Bottoms Marsh Wildlife Area

Bottoms Marsh Wildlife Area is located in the southern Willamette Valley near Eugene, Oregon, encompassing a mosaic of wetlands, seasonal marshes, riparian zones, and grasslands. The area was established primarily for waterfowl habitat and wildlife conservation. It serves as an important stopover for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway, providing breeding, feeding, and resting grounds for ducks, geese, and shorebirds. The marshes create a dynamic ecosystem that supports a range of species, including beavers, muskrats, and a variety of amphibians. Historically, the land around Bottoms Marsh was used for farming and grazing before being acquired by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to restore and protect wetland environments. Today, this wildlife area attracts birders, hunters, anglers, and nature lovers seeking tranquil outdoor experiences. The diverse habitats encourage wildlife viewing year-round, with prime birdwatching in spring and fall migration seasons. Activities available include birdwatching, hunting during proper seasons, nature photography, and fishing in adjacent waterways. Though there are no developed campgrounds on site, the area is easily accessible for day use and offers several walking paths and viewing blinds close to prime marsh areas. Visitors can appreciate the natural soundscape of frogs, waterfowl calls, and river flows in this protected wetland environment. The area's flat terrain and open vistas make it a valuable resource for environmental education and outdoor recreation focused on wetland ecosystems.
